The veins in our legs, which are responsible for returning blood to our heart contain a series of one-way valves that direct the flow upward. Long periods of standing or sitting can put extra stress on these valves and cause them to fail. This failure of the valves results in lower leg swelling, leg pain, aching, heaviness, night cramps, restless leg syndrome, unsightly varicose veins, skin discoloration, and even non-healing ulcers. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can obstruct venous flow, resulting in similar symptoms. Atherosclerosis in the arteries can cause a lack of adequate circulation in the leg muscles, resulting in daytime cramps, constant severe pain that is worse with exercise and relieved with rest as well as foot ulcers.
